Who would of thought more kids would be getting it in at the skate park rather than the basketball court this weekend? Thanks to DC’s own Darren Harper there was more energy on the half pipe than half court on the sunny Saturday afternoon in Shaw Skate Park. The 29 year old pro skater held a free skate camp this weekend and called on home-bred MC Tabi Bonney for a special performance to close up the clinic. “The key is to keep our kids busy, you gotta show them different things,” said the Southeast native. “I’m just trying to encourage them and motivate them.” It was certainly a good time for the kids. And they were definitely motivated, as they competed in a game of SKATE for prizes, and everyone had a chance to take flight down the stairs and show off their best trick. “Its something that I didn’t really see, anything of this when I was growing up,” added Tabi. “I’m happy to see it cause I know that in the future its gonna open up for more entrepreneurs, more multi-millionaires.” The overall event was a success, and the children enjoyed themselves. Perhaps Harper could change future of skate boarding in the hood, the same way skateboarding in the hood changed him.
